About

"The evolving Francophile..."

My husband Jack has always wanted to live in Paris and learn French. I thought it would be good for him to achieve his life time dream. Hence, we moved to Paris in 2008. My first year was difficult. I started "missives" to relieve some stress and chronicle my life so friends back in the US could read what I am experiencing. I currently write about my food in Paris, which is my passion., travel experiences, and "experiences living in Paris."

It is definitely a challenge to live here, but each year it gets easier, and quite enjoyable, in large part because I value friendships over locale. I have a love/hate relationship with Paris as do most Parisians, mais La vie est belle (but life is good)!

This restaurant is located in the 7eme in a beautiful outdoor passage called "Beaupassage", close to Le Bon Marché.

It was recommended by a friend and I thought why not. It'll be an experience. Despite there being a very touristy vibe, it was quite pleasant. The weather was great and we sat outside.

It was originally a butcher shop and now a boucherie restaurant. They basically specialized in aged meats. This is definitely not a place for vegetarians or for people who do not eat meat.

ENTRÉE

BURRATA CHEESE.

We anticipated since the meat will be pretty heavy that we agreed we'd share burrata cheese. I must say this was very good. The burrata was creamy with some avocado sauce, tomatoes and greens with a little black cracker that didn't taste of squid, but more like black ash used for baking.

Loved the dish.

Rump Steak, cut from the bottom round so exceptionally tender.

Our waiter came by and recommended the "Rump Steak" for three, and we agreed.  He was trying to convince us we wanted it "saignant", which is extremely rare.  Myself and a friend cannot do rare or raw meat. For some reason I just can't digest raw meat. We insisted we wanted it "a point", which means medium rare, after giving us that, ah you foreigner's look, he said OK.

Another wait-person came by and showed us a huge hunk of meat in its raw state (a-la-a Morton Steak House in USA), with 3 tiny taste pieces of raw meat,  only one opted to taste it. As mentioned I don't eat raw meat. I think that piece of meat showcased was a display and made the rounds because it certainly wasn't ours, because when the actual steak came, it was not even half the size of what we saw. Our wait person told us it'd be enough for 3-people, imagine my horror when the dish arrived. We basically got 3-tiny slices of meat, albeit the steak was melt in your mouth tender and delicious, I wanted to scream 'WHERE'S THE BEEF", a slogan used in commercials from yesteryear.

BROCCOLI RABE.

I normally write side dishes along with the main, but since it came later, it was like a separate course.

So, in addition to the small bowl of fries and a teeny-tiny bowl of salad we all had to share, we ordered broccoli rabe. It never came, so we had to remind them.

Finally, we received them. It was good, but if we were lucky, we got 2-stems each.

SUMMARY

I have no qualms about the food. It is in a very tourist spot, but I would say mostly french tourist. The steak was so melt-in-your-mouth tender and delicious and it was grass fed. No hormones and GMO. The aging process worked well to make the steak tender. We opted not to get a dessert for fear we may get baby food portions.

Now here's the biggest complaint I have, it's the portion sizes as well as the price. If you have a teeny-tiny appetite don't mind that it's expensive, then this restaurant is for you. You can find the same kinds of steak easily in so many places in Paris that you get more bang for your money. Off the top of my head, "Chez Denise".  Note, the menu is a-la-carte.

If it was just about flavors, then I would rate this pretty high. But for the price of the dishes to food portion ratio, it is very poor. And, although service was polite, it was spotty. They don't really listen to their customer.

So, for a shared steak (fries and salad complimentary), 6-glasses of wine, burrata and broccoli rabe, our bill came to 204€ or 68€ each. Would I go back, ABSOLUTELY NOT. There are so many other places in Paris for a better deal.
